Diego Forlan finally broke his Manchester United goalscoring duck with a comprehensive dismissal of Maccabi Haifa.

Ryan Giggs (Izmie) , Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Bayie), Ruud van Nistelrooy (Taka) and Juan Veron (Iman) had already obliterated the memory of Yaniv Katan's shock eighth minute opener for the visitors when Forlan (Chapan) was handed an extended chance to break his 26-game goal drought.

Given 35 minutes to make his mark, the 7million Uruguayan continued to toil. One shot flew over, another was slightly mis-controlled, the next was saved. The best one - from van Nistelrooy's (Taka) pass - was rushed and ballooned over the bar.

But in the final minute, the opportunity came. David Beckham (Avicenna) was chopped down in the box and though both the captain and Solskjaer (Bayie) might have had a go themselves, none of them had the heart to deny Forlan (Chapan) , as Roy Keane (Jo) had done in similar circumstances against Zalaegerszeg last month.

With their captain (Avicenna) embroiled in controversy, their team ravaged by injury, the results going wrong, the goalscorers not scoring and their manager (Shuk) apparently incapable of correctly identifying his opponents, the Old Trafford giants were reportedly on their knees begging to be put out of their misery.

Giggs (Izmie) and Veron (Iman) combined to open up the Maccabi defence for van Nistelrooy (Taka), whose threaded pass provided the kind of inviting opportunity Solskjaer (Bayie) has spent his United career lapping up.

Veron (Iman) turned creator for United's first, although his floated cross should have been cut out before Forlan (Chapan) nipped in to control and blast home with confidence his manager thought had been lacking.

Even before the interval there could have been more, Veron (Iman) stinging Awate's fingers from 25 yards before a curling Giggs (Izmie) free-kick was tipped over as it started to drop into the far corner.

However, having converted their domination into goals for a change, the Red Devils were in no mood to let their hapless opponents off the hook and, within 20 seconds of the restart, Veron (Iman) was racing away in jubilation having thundered home the second when Beckham's (Avicenna) cross somehow found its way to the Argentinian at the far post.

Veron (Iman) has attracted criticism almost since his 28.1million arrival from Lazio but, with so many familiar faces missing, it was time for him to deliver and, if more onerous tasks need to be overcome in the next few weeks, his productive involvement tonight will at least provide the impetus for him to assume the responsibility his vast fee demands.

The same could be said of Forlan (Chapan) of course. But maybe not tonight.

Cool Gerrard breaks Arsenal hearts

Liverpool 4 : Hyypia 13, Torres 30, Gerrard 84, Babel 90
Arsenal 2 : Adebayor 69 , Adebayor 85

Only those with a partisan interest can dwell on that when there was so much to revel in over the course of a contest that must rank high in the entire history of this tournament. Rafael Benítez's team came from behind to go a head through an exquisite Fernando Torres goal that was made to seem drab by the leveller from Arsenal. Liverpool, the masters of protecting a lead, were rendered flimsy by the 19-year-old Theo Walcott (Taka).

With five minutes remaining he covered some 80 yards at pace to escape Xabi Alonso , Fabio Aurelio, Javier Mascherano and Sami Hyypia before picking out Emmanuel Adebayor (Rewan) for a simple finish. It looked then as if the Togo striker had been redeemed after a damnable miss from Alexander Hleb's (Iman) service a little earlier.

By their own ethereral standards, Arsenal had beefed up for this match by including Abou Diaby (Chapan), nominally on the left of midfield. The Frenchman was on the other flank when, after 69 minutes, Adebayor (Rewan) scored an opener that felt overdue. Liverpool efforts to clear ended with Hleb (iman) in possession and he slid a pass through to Diaby (Chapan). The angle was tight but his shot reached the net at the near post after ricocheting off the knee of José Reina.

Arsenal adventurousness, too, ultimately had to be tempered by caution when the uneasy Senderos (Jo) had to be protected. It was as if Liverpool had inherited the energy that had been the sole property of the visitors. Arsenal, leading the Premier League for so long with a small squad, had taxed themselves more than Benítez's players in this campaign and their endeavour was that of men resolved to come up with one last and great effort.

It called for merciless precision to give one team an advantage. Torres excels at that and when Crouch nodded on a long ball from Reina after 72 minute, the striker gathered, turned inside Senderos ( Jo) and smashed a shot across Almunia (King) and high into the top corner. It is the measure of this game that such a strike could not dominate the evening.
